Cunning: What makes the White Die way better than the Black One

omg ..._ says ...This week I decided to break from discussing specific skirmish cards trying kill time till wave 1 is out and I can evaluate many of the cards more fully based on wave 1’s release.  So I wanted to look at a specific key word that I feel might not be talked about enough.  I haven’t noticed too many people discussing what I think is an incredibly valuable key word in the skirmish, that is cunning.  Cunning reads; While defending apply +1 block to the defense results for each evade rolled.  I would take cunning with a white die over the black die any day.  It is very apparent from first looking at the game that the white die won’t be rolling you nearly as many blocks as the black die, and although you have a chance of dodging the black die is usually consistently solid an blocking decent damage.  However cunning changes things greatly.  Let’s compare the sides of the black and white die.

Side 1:
The black die has an evade
The white die has a blank

Side2:

The white die has an evade

Side 3:
The black die has a block
The white die has a block

Side 4:
The black die has two blocks
The white die has a block and an evade

Side 5:
The black die has two blocks
The white die has a block and an evade

Side 6:
The black die has three blocks
The white die has a dodge

As seen above both die are good for different reasons white die will cancel those surges better as well as having a chance to totally dodge an attack, whereas the black die will consistently block damage but can’t cancel any specials granted by surges easily.  Against most opponents I would rather see a straight up block than an evade however some opponents I’d much rather see the evade.  I would probably rank a block a little above an evade.  So let’s look at which is better.

Characters who roll average of one surge or better:
+ Surge Damage > 1:
Chewbacca
Han Solo
Luke Skywalker
Jyn Odan
Darth Vader
Royal Guard Champion
Royal Guard(elite)
E-Web Engineer(elite)
Royal Guard
Probe Droid(elite)
IG-88
+ Surge Damage = 1:
E-Web Engineer
Imperial Officer(elite)
Probe Droid
Imperial Officer
+ No Surge Damage
Gaarkhan(Pierce 1)
Rebel Trooper(Pierce 1)
Rebel Saboteur(Pierce 2)
General Weiss(Pierce 2)

Which makes 19 out of 30 deployment cards allow for either greater than 1 damage or equal to 1 damage(I’m also counting pierce in this), which means that a evade is at least the same as if not better than a block 19/30 times.  However due to it being an average of 1 surge a round  I think it would be important to take a few points off for the times a surge isn’t rolled.  Overall considering many times a surge is better, many times it doesn’t make a difference, and many times it won’t apply at all, I feel that a surge is worth about 2/3 of a block.  So if we were to add up each side of a die based on that then we would get Black Die = 6.667 and White Die = 5 for this calculation I removed the best side of both die.  I’m not sure how to rate the dodge but it is obviously far better than the 3 blocks. So already we see the white die might very well be better than the black.  However the cunning key word makes that gap far larger.  The white die with the cunning key word at the very least matches every side of the black die with the exception of the blank side of the white die.  Below is the comparison taking cunning into account:

Side 1:
The black die has an evade
The white die has a blank

Side2:
The black die has a block
The white die has a block and an evade

Side 3:
The black die has a block
The white die has a block

Side 4:
The black die has two blocks
The white die has two blocks and an evade

Side 5:
The black die has two blocks
The white die has two blocks and an evade

Side 6:
The black die has three blocks
The white die has a dodge

As you can see now only one side can be considered worse than the black die and only one is equal to it, all four other sides are downright better.  The new calculation excluding best sides are Black Die = 6.667 White Die = 8.  And however you might weight the dodge which is obviously better than 3 blocks the gap would widen even further.  Personally I think cunning is one of the stronger defensive key words in the game if not the strongest(which foresight might be the strongest).  One of the most interesting match ups to me is the Jyn, Han match-up where Jyn can get a free evade each time on defense making her even harder to hit.
